    What's Next:
    Career Options for Urban Youth

    Saturday, June 2, 2012
    8:30am--1:00pm
    Oxford Circle Mennonite Church

    900 E. Howell St.
    Philadelphia, PA 19149
    (215) 288-5330

    Purpose:

The primary purpose of this event is to provide tools and resources for pastors, youth leaders, and youth workers to support the urban youth and young adults they work with in finding healthy career options.

The second purpose is to provide a forum for representatives of voluntary service agencies to think about the special needs of urban youth and begin conversation about how to make their programs more accessible.

The program will also be open to participation by youth and young adults and to people from outside the city. We plan to include information relevant to high school and younger youth, as well as post high school.

    Program:

8:30-9:00 am  Registration, Resource Displays, Coffee
    9:00-9:15Introduction, Devotions, Philly Jobs Picture
9:15-10:00Plenary Panel - reflections by young adults on their "career" choices:
    - Military Veteran
    - Ex-Offender
    - Former Drug Dealer
10:00-10:45Plenary - Overview of career options for urban youth and young adults
    10:45-11:00Break
11:00-12:00Breakout session: three 20-minute periods, so participants can hear from three different organizations (about 8 different organizations to choose from)
    12:00Lunch for everyone
Lunch meeting for agency representatives to talk about making programs more accessible for urban youth / young adults

    Background:

Many youth growing up in the city end up in military service or criminal activity because they have few other options. Good jobs are hard to come by and voluntary service or higher education options are out of reach. Some "alternative" job opportunities for young adults, such as Peace Corps, require a college degree, so may not be practical options for many urban youth. Other programs, which send participants to work in low-income communities, don't provide sufficient stipends for participants who themselves come from low-income families and have immediate financial obligations to their families.
