Family retreat with separate programs for adults, youth, and children, sponsored by
The Peace and Justice Committee, Eastern District Conference and Franconia Mennonite Conference of
the Mennonite Church USA.
Adult Program:
Creating Hope in the Crossfire:
Colombian Churches and Their Witness
to the Mennonites of North America
with
Walter Ceballos
Mennonite Church leader in Armenia, Colombia
and Janna Hunter-Bowman
Witness for Peace
Through stories, music, conversation and reflection, we will share the experience of
the churches of Colombia engaged in peacemaking in communities where civilians are often
threatened with violence and death by Colombian military, paramilitary, and guerilla soldiers.
Walter Ceballos is a leader of the Mennonite Church in Armenia, a city in
the heart of Colombia's coffee growing region, and works closely with
Justapaz, the justice and peace
ministry of the Colombian Mennonite Church.
He is a physiologist by training and a member of the pastoral team. He
surfaced as an important community and peace ministries leader after the
1998 earthquake that left hundreds if not thousands homeless. He led
accompaniment and helped organize rebuilding efforts. In recent years he
has focused on overcoming trauma with victims of Colombia's armed conflict.
He both attends to individual cases and participates in the national
Coalition for Managing and Overcoming Trauma. Walter and his wife have two children.
Janna Hunter-Bowman is a member of Bally Mennonite Church and currently resides in Washington DC
where she works as the National Grassroots Organizer on Colombia with
Witness for Peace.
Prior to joining Witness for Peace in July of 2004, Janna was the
International Education and Advocacy Coordinator for Justapaz,
the Center for Justice, Peace and Nonviolent Action in Bogotá, Colombia (2002- 2004).
There she monitored the implementation of Plan Colombia
around the country, specializing in the impact of war and US military assistance on faith communities.
She also organized and led international campaigns for threatened peace, human rights and church workers.
In 2003 she spearheaded and co-led the only college course with institutional support in Colombia.
Janna has provided leadership and translation for workshops on peace policy and activism from a faith
perspective in Palestine, Zimbabwe, Colombia and the United States. In 2001
she established the on-going Sister Peace Church partnership program, also from Bogotá with Justapaz.
Janna, along with her husband Jess, are planning to move back to Colombia in early 2006.
Janna's work experience also includes a paralegal position with a pro-bono immigration law office on the
Texas-Mexico border (2000-2001); she has also done anthropological research.
In addition to action alerts, communiqués for organizational constituencies and memos for Congress,
she has written for Sojourners, Common Dreams, and numerous church press periodicals. Her articles
also appear in several books including, "Where was God on September 11?" and "Chicken Soup for the
Soul--Stories for a Better World."
Janna graduated from Goshen College in 2000 with a major in Anthropology/ Sociology and a minors in
communications and Justice, Peace and Conflict studies.

Financial Information
Our registration rates are listed on the registration form above, but the actual cost of the retreat
is about 50% greater than what the participants pay. The difference is made up with funds from
the Eastern District / Franconia Peace and Justice budget. The actual
lodging and meal costs are about $120 for adults and youth, and $40 for children (ages 6-11).
not including program costs such as honorariums, travel, and accomodations for our presenters,
publicity, and other miscellaneous expenses.
If you wish to pay the actual cost of the retreat, it would be greatly appreciated. Other donations
to the retreat are also welcome.
Some financial help is available for those who find it difficult to pay the amount we charge. We
want to enable as many people as possible to attend this retreat.
