Family retreat with separate programs for adults, youth, and children, sponsored by The Peace and Justice Committee, Eastern District Conference and Franconia Mennonite Conference of the Mennonite Church USA.

Adult Program:

Living Peace

with Susan Mark Landis
Peace Advocate, Mennonite Church USA

Making the decision to live Christ's peace offers at least three challenges:

  • opening ourselves to the Spirit's care,
  • sharing God's call to justice within our congregations, and
  • inviting people beyond our congregations to learn of the centrality of peace to the gospel.
  • But our prophetic call often isolates us from others. Come for the refreshment of sitting with others who share your concerns and gathering practical ideas for living peace when you go back home.

Susan Mark Landis serves as Peace Advocate for Mennonite Church USA Executive Board Office of the Director. In this role, she leads and organizes advocacy, coordinates interdenominational peace and justice relationships, provides an accountability for churchwide agencies around peace and justice issues and serves as co-staff for the Peace and Justice Support Network.

She publishes 'PeaceSigns', an e-zine that looks at the news through a Christ-centered lens; coordinates the Student Aid Fund for Nonregistrants and serves on the Christian Peacemaker Teams Steering Committee and the Executive Board anti-racism team. She lives and works in Orrville, Ohio, and is a member of Oak Grove Mennonite Church in Smithville, Ohio.

    Youth Program:

    Faith, Youth, and the Military

    with Titus Peachey

This is an interactive, practical workshop on the meaning of Christ's peace in times of war and military occupations. Role plays, small group discussion, and question/answer times create an engaging learning environment for everyone. There will be time to explore questions about conscientious objection to war, Selective Service guidelines, a potential draft, military recruitment and peace education.

Titus Peachey is the Director of Peace Education for Mennonite Central Committee US (MCC-US). After two years of college, Titus went to Vietnam as a conscientious objector under the auspices of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference mission program. From 1980-1985, he and his wife Linda served as directors of MCC's program in Laos, and were later co-directors of MCC-US Peace and Justice Ministries. Titus returned to Laos in 1994 to help administer MCC's bomb removal program.

    Childrens Programs (led by volunteers)

There will be separate programs during the three adult sessions for children of all ages and baby-sitting for preschoolers. Childrens age groups are nursery, 5-8, and 9-12. (Additional volunteers are needed; teaching materials will be provided.)

    Financial Information

Our registration rates are listed on the registration form above, but the actual cost of the retreat is about 50% greater than what the participants pay. The difference is made up with funds from the Eastern District / Franconia Peace and Justice budget. The actual lodging and meal costs are about $120 for adults and youth, and $40 for children (ages 6-11). not including program costs such as honorariums, travel, and accomodations for our presenters, publicity, and other miscellaneous expenses.

If you wish to pay the actual cost of the retreat, it would be greatly appreciated. Other donations to the retreat are also welcome.

Some financial help is available for those who find it difficult to pay the amount we charge. We want to enable as many people as possible to attend this retreat. (Contact Bob Walden, 610-861-0653.)

If you have dietary restrictions or require other special accomodations (e.g., diabetic, or vegitarian, or difficulty climbing stairs, etc.) please include information about your needs.
