Just Peacemaking

February 8-10,2002 (Friday-Sunday)
Canadensis, PA (in the Poconos)

Family retreat with separate programs for adults, youth, and children, sponsored by The Peace and Social Concerns Committee, Eastern District Conference, General Conference Mennonite Church and Franconia Mennonite Conference.

Adult Program:

Just Peacemaking

with Dr. Glen H. Stassen

Just Peacemaking goes beyond the traditional questions of war and peace (e.g, whether it is permissible to participate in war), to discover peacemaking practices that will create justice and avoid war.

We will explore Just Peacemaking, beginning from the biblical foundation of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Our discussions will compare transforming initiatives, justice, and community in international society in the biblical text and the Just Peacemaking paradigm. Dr. Stassen's presentations will be drawn largely from his books, Just Peacemaking: Transforming Initiatives for Justice and Peace (Westminster/John Knox Press), and Just Peacemaking: Ten Practices for Abolishing War (Pilgrim Press).

Glen H. Stassen, Professor of Christian Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary, has authored publications on many topics in Christian ethics and peacemaking.

Youth Program:

Us, Them, Little White Daisies, & Jesus

A discussion with youth about how Shalom looks in today's world.

Curt Weaver is employed with Congregational Resources in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, where he works in youth ministry and peace education.

Marlene Frankenfield serves as youth minister for the Franconia Mennonite Conference and Christopher Dock Mennonite High School. She serves as a resource for youth ministers, volunteers, youth workers and student leaders.

Childrens Programs (led by volunteers)

There will be separate programs during the three adult sessions for children of all ages and baby-sitting for preschoolers. Childrens age groups are nursery, 5-8, and 9-12. (Additional volunteers are needed; teaching materials will be provided.)

    Financial Information

Our registration rates are listed on the registration form above, but the actual cost of the retreat is about 50% greater than what the participants pay. The difference is made up with funds from the Eastern District Peace and Social Concerns budget and Franconia Conference. The actual lodging and meal costs are about $110 for adults and youth, and $35 for children (ages 6-11). not including program costs such as honorariums, travel, and accomodations for our presenters, publicity, and other miscellaneous expenses.

If you wish to pay the actual cost of the retreat, it would be greatly appreciated. Other donations to the retreat are also welcome.

Some financial help is available for those who find it difficult to pay the amount we charge. We want to enable as many people as possible to attend this retreat. (Contact Carl Yusavitz, 215-248-2140.)

If you have dietary restrictions or require other special accomodations (e.g., diabetic, or vegitarian, or difficulty climbing stairs, etc.) please include information about your needs.
