Peace Gatherings and Events -- 2004

February 6-8, 2004 (Fri.-Sun.) Spruce Lake Winter Peace Retreat is jointly sponsored by Eastern District and Franconia Conferences.

  • Adult program: "Fear, Faith and Fig Trees: an Alternative Vision for Security" led by Daryl Byler and Bethany Spicher from the MCC Washington Office.
  • Youth Program: "From the Garden to the City" will be led by Jeff and Katie Delp, who direct urban ministry programs in Atlanta.     March 28-30, 2004 (Sun.-Tues.), MCC Washington Office: 2004 Spring Seminar Washington, D.C.
    "No One Shall Make Them Afraid: A Biblical Response to U.S. Security Policy", a seminar to explore biblical alternatives to the current U.S. "War on Terrorism." What are the policies and practices that lead to true security? The seminar is designed for youth (11th grade and older) and adults. Registration on or before March 1, 2004 is $60. Late registration, after this date, is $75.

    September 16, 2004 (8:00-10:30am: Souderton, PA). Pastors' Breakfast Seminar on Preaching Peace. In these times of major military conflict and political inclinations to prove who is the most patriotic, how do Mennonite pastors preach about peace? As we seek to become missional and the personal and theological diversity increases in our congregations, what are constructive ways to preach and teach about Christ's way of peace?     Sept. 23-25, 2004 (Harrisonburg, VA)
    God, Democracy and U.S. Power: Believer's Church Perspectives. How do Christians in the Believers Church tradition, living in a democracy that is the world's dominant power, understand their witness for God and their relationship to political authority? This conference will be held on the campuses of Eastern Mennonite University and Bridgewater College in Virginia, September 23-25, 2004.

    October 28-30, 2004 (Columbus, OH) "Choosing Peace: Practicing Faith in Public," will be a Regional Peace Gathering, organized by the Peace and Justice Support Network of MCUSA, to be held at Columbus Mennonite Church and North Broadway United Methodist Church.
    The keynote speaker will be J. Daryl Byler, Director of the Washington Office, Mennonite Central Committee U.S. He will be speaking on the relationship between faith and the public arena.

    There will be workshops on:

    • Youth and the Military
    • Restorative Justice
    • Peacemaking and Iraq
    • Hospitality
    • Peace Education
    • Interfaith Peacemaking
    • Peace and the Arts
    • Speaking Truth to Power
    as well as programs for youth and children, Bible study and worship.

    December 11, 2004 (Saturday: Nazareth to Bethlehem, PA)
    45th Annual Christmas Peace Pilgrimage This annual pilgrimage recalls the journey of Mary and Joseph. Participants meet in Bethlehem at 11am, and buses transport pilgrims to Nazareth Moravian Church on Center Square where the Pilgrimage begins. Pilgrims may join at any point along the way. The pilgrimage concludes at Christ United Church of Christ in Bethlehem, around 5:30 for a light meal and rally. Guest speaker will be Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches and former Pennsylvania Congressman.
